Torrey – Our beloved Father, Son, Brother, and Friend, Southworth Wells Swede, passed away on August 30, 2020 at his home, the Capital Reef Inn and Cafe, in Torrey, Utah. Southworth was born in Los Angeles, California on September 6, 1944 to Robert Guy Swede and Mary Adelaide Holland. He attended New Trier High School and went on to earn a PHD in psychology from UC Berkeley. He married Susan Weed in 1965 and together they had a daughter, Justine. They later divorced. He married Barbara Ruth Lester in 1983 and they had two sons, Dustin and Travis. They later divorced. Southworth owned and operated the Capitol Reef Inn and Cafe for over 30 years, providing employment to the locals of Torrey as well as accommodations and delicious meals to many visitors. He enjoyed and was talented with stonework, and used his skills alongside his brother Robert to build an impressive replica of Anasazi stonework near the Inn called the Torrey Kiva. He loved caring for cats and also loved reading, especially mystery novels. Southworth is survived by his sons, Dustin and Travis Swede, both of Salt Lake City; and his daughter, Justine Smythe of Saugerties, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Kennison Swede. His remains have been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
