Obituary

Sheree Mellor McKean, age 70, of Gunnison, Utah, passed away surrounded by family at the Mission at Community Rehab in Centerfield, Utah on April 12th, 2026. Sheree was born on October 10th, 1955 in Salina, Utah to Cal and Carole Mellor of Gunnison, Utah. While growing up, Sheree developed a strong sense of service and hard work from a young age working at Cal and Carole's Polar King Drive-In. She graduated from Gunnison High School in 1973.

Sheree married Craig McKean on September 12th, 1975. Together, they had three children and purchased a home in Gunnison, Utah. They later divorced.

Sheree earned her LPN Certificate from Utah Technical College in 1975. She worked as Dr. Jan Christensen's nurse for 28 years. She continued her career working as a nurse at the Mayfield/Centerfield Care Center. She was known for her kind and loving care. Sheree's work as a nurse was a true reflection of her heart. She cared deeply for those she served, always offering compassion, patience, and dignity to every person she encountered. To her, nursing was more than a profession, it was a calling to serve others.

Beyond her professional life, Sheree was a woman of many talents. She enjoyed cross-stitching, crocheting and People Magazine's crossword puzzles. She also loved supporting and cheering on her children in dance, school, and sports. Sheree had a rare and beautiful gift for making others feel accepted and loved. She welcomed everyone without judgment, offering kindness, compassion, and a listening ear to anyone who needed it. Whether family, friend, or stranger, she had a way of making people feel like they belonged. Her warmth and genuine love for others left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Above all, Sheree was an incredible mother. She devoted her life to her children, always putting their needs before her own. She was their constant source of love, strength, and support. She would celebrate their successes, comfort them in difficult times, and be the first person they would turn to for guidance. Her children knew without question that they were deeply loved, and that love will remain with them always.

Sheree was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and deeply cherished her opportunities to serve in the Church. She especially loved working with the young women and serving in Relief Society. She built lasting friendships and strengthened those around her. One of her greatest joys in later years was her calling in the nursery, where her kindness, patience, and warm spirit blessed the lives of many little children and their families. She served with a willing heart and found happiness in lifting and caring for others throughout her life.

Sheree was always committed to staying connected to her family and traveled extensively to visit them. She enjoyed taking family trips to explore Utah, as well as other places like California, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska. She also enjoyed several trips to visit her sister’s family in New York, taking many vacations with all of her sisters and her mom. She always maintained a close relationship with her parents and siblings, as well as having many lifelong friendships.

She is survived by: her children, Hayley Mortensen and husband Brett of American Fork, Utah, Cassidy McKean of Orem, Utah, and Garrett McKean and wife Alexa of St. George, Utah; her cherished grandchildren, Kelsee Mortensen, Abigail Mortensen, Emma Mortensen, Hannah Mortensen, Kealyn Mortensen, Liam Mortensen, Rylen Mortensen, Jax McKean, Piper McKean and Emmett Mortensen; and her siblings, Gary Myrup and wife Rita of Gunnison, Utah, Brother-in-law Ray Ginther of New York, and Leslee Nelson and husband Ken of Redmond, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cal and Carole Mellor and sister Marie Ginther. She touched so many lives as a nurse, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Mission at Community Rehab in Centerfield and Gunnison Hospice for the care they provided and for the love and compassion they showed her.
