Starts at 11:00 am (Mountain time)
Ruth Haynes Smith lived a life defined by devotion, not so quiet strength, and a deep love for her family and faith.
She was born on June 20, 1937, in Grantsville. From a young age, Ruth carried a determined spirit that would guide her throughout her life. At just 16 years old, she traveled to Elko, where she called her father to ask permission to marry her beloved Loran Smith—a decision that marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership built on love, commitment, and shared purpose.
Ruth graduated from Grantsville High School with the Class of 1955 and went on to build a life rich in simple joys and meaningful service. She had a gift for music, often playing the piano and singing, filling her home with warmth and harmony. She loved her faith, found comfort in the companionship of her dogs, and created a home where family was always at the center.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ruth served faithfully as a Primary President, guiding and nurturing children with kindness, patience, and unwavering dedication. Her faith was a steady foundation in her life, and she found great joy in temple worship and genealogy work, cherishing the opportunity to connect past and present generations.
Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother, and guiding presence to her family. She is survived by her children: LuAnn Kuhn, Douglas Smith, Diane Ouderkirk (Bob), David Smith (Penny), and Charles Smith (Erma); 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loran Smith; her daughter Sharon Forshe; her parents, Jesse and Ethel Haynes; her brother, Phares Haynes; her sister, Linda Winget; grandson Lee Kuhn; and great-grandson Carter Barnes.
Ruth’s life was a testament to enduring love, steadfast faith, and strength of a woman who cared deeply for those around her. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the example she set.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Graveside services for Ruth will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 18, 2026 at the Salina Pioneer Cemetery.
Burial will be under the care of Springer Turner Funeral Homes of Richfield and Salina.
