Obituary

Julie Melense Edmo Durfee was born on August 7, 1956, in Pocatello, Idaho. She was known for her strong work ethic, steady determination, and deep commitment to animals and her community.

Julie graduated from Pierce College in Woodland Hills in 1981. She later met the love of her life in Salt Lake City, where he was working as a carpet layer. They were married on December 13, 1986, and soon made their home in Aurora.

Julie began working at the local cattle auction where, in her very first hour, she was run over by a wild red heifer. True to who she was, she did not quit. She stayed, learned the business, and formed lifelong friendships. She later worked at Burns Saddlery, continuing to build her knowledge of livestock and western life.

She eventually turned her love for animals into her own business, Happy Trails Dog Grooming.

Julie proudly served on the original board of directors that oversaw the creation of Blackhawk Arena, a project that remained close to her heart. In 1989, she and her husband joined the Salina Riding Club, dedicating the next 18 years to serving in many roles and giving countless hours to the organization.

She served as secretary and later as Rodeo Queen Chairwoman for 10 years, mentoring young women and cheering on many of “her girls” as they advanced to the Utah State Rodeo Queen competitions. In 2004, she was elected President of the Salina Riding Club, becoming the first woman to hold that position in the club’s 60-year history—an achievement that reflected the respect and admiration she earned.

Julie and her beloved husband, Merlin “Durf” Durfee, devoted their lives to raising animals of all kinds. Over the years they cared for horses, including many foals from their stallion, along with cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, cats, dogs, turtles, and even a parrot.

Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin “Durf” Durfee. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Graveside services for Julie will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at the Aurora Cemetery under the care of Springer Turner Funeral Homes of Richfield and Salina. The graveside will be followed by a celebration of life at The Elle located at 285 west Main Street Salina, Utah
