Richfield, Utah- Dennis “Skittles” Patterson, born September 9, 1967, passed away suddenly on the afternoon of October 21, 2025. Dennis was a proud graduate of Gunnison High School, Class of 1985.
Dennis spent most of his working life as a dedicated coal miner — a profession he deeply loved and took great pride in. He often spoke fondly of his years at the Skyline and Sufco Mines and the lifelong friendships he made there. He started out as a shuttle car operator, a job he took great pride in, and later became a roof bolter. He was very competitive and loved to “out-bolt” his coworkers. Eventually, he began to operate the continuous miner — a position he truly loved. Dennis was chosen by his company, Skyline, to visit the Joy Manufacturing plant and give his opinion on a new continuous miner and bolter — an accomplishment he was very proud of. Along the way, he picked up the nickname “Skittles” because they were a high-energy treat, and he reminded many coworkers of them. He wore that nickname proudly. Coal mining wasn’t just Dennis’s job — it was his heart. Even after retiring, he spent many hours talking about the work and the memories he cherished. He was a good friend and will be missed by many.
Beyond his work, Dennis had many talents and hobbies that reflected his love of life and the outdoors. He was an exceptionally gifted woodworker, creating remarkable pieces that showcased his creativity and skill — a talent that many said was never used to its fullest potential. Dennis loved working in his shop or sitting in his backyard by a fire, where he could relax and enjoy the quiet. He loved throwing horseshoes and would always accept a request to play, never turning down a friendly match. Dennis also had a green thumb, known for growing impressive gardens and joyfully sharing his harvest with others. When Dennis wasn’t working with his hands, he loved heading to the mountains for a good ride and some peace in nature.
Dennis was married three times throughout his life and was blessed with five wonderful children. He first married Gina, together they welcomed three children Skylar, Shelby & Brady. They later divorced. He then married Heather, they welcomed two children, Kaydence & Keyston. They also later divorced. His third marriage was to Andrea Patterson. Though their marriage ended in divorce, Dennis and Andrea remained very close friends and shared a strong bond. They always went everywhere together. His passing will leave a huge void in her daily routine.
Dennis was a man of many talents, great love, and deep emotion. Though he faced his share of struggles, he never lost his generous heart or his ability to make others smile. If asked for help, he was always willing to lend a hand.
Dennis is survived by his parents, Dennis and Kathy Patterson; three sisters; five children Skylar, Shelby, Brady, Kaydence & Keystone; five grandchildren.
His memory will live on in the laughter, love, and stories shared by those who knew him best. He will be deeply missed.
