Mayfield, Utah – Ace Robertson, age 99, passed away peacefully at his home in Mayfield on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. He was born on June 21, 1927, in Talmage, Texas to Lonnie and Cordelia Robertson. Ace spent his childhood moving with his family between Texas, Oklahoma and California during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. His family picked cotton and share cropped. They moved to California in 1936 to escape the dust storms and continued to get work picking cotton and various crops.

During World War II Ace joined the Navy and trained as an Aviation Machinist. He worked on Navy aircraft such as Hellcats, Corsairs, P2Vs, and SNJs, keeping planes airworthy for pilots. He finished his first tour of duty in 1946 and re-enlisted in 1947 and served until 1949. In the interim, he earned his private pilot license and, upon return, completed training for seaplane, commercial, and multi-engine ratings.

While working in California after the war, Ace met the love of his life, Dorothy Berry, a schoolteacher, at a high school dance. They dated for a few months, married on December 17, 1950, and raised three children: Johnnie, Theresa, and Sherri. The family lived an active life outdoors—camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and traveling. Ace and Dorothy loved hunting for arrowheads and Native American artifacts and the family spent many vacations camping and searching for arrowheads. Ace was an avid hunter and in his 80s, Ace hunted in Africa twice.

Ace pursued a career with the California Division of Highways. Starting as a mechanic in Bishop, he steadily climbed the ranks and eventually became Highway Equipment Superintendent for the State of California. Each promotion led to a new location and the family lived all over California.

In 1983, Ace and Dorothy retired and moved to Mayfield, where he farmed alfalfa, oats, barley, and raised cattle for nearly two decades before selling the farm land in 2003. Ace served as Mayfield’s mayor from 1992 to 1997. He was the town’s first non-Mormon mayor. At age 85, after a 60-year break from flying, Ace returned to the air. Over the next decade, he owned and flew four small planes—a pair of Cessna 150s, a 172, and a Piper Warrior.

Ace and Dorothy were devoted members of the Centerfield Baptist Church, and the Horseshoe Mountain Church. They were also proud members of the Lion’s Club. Ace lived a rich and adventurous life, recently celebrating his 99th birthday with friends and family.

He will be lovingly remembered by his many friends, his children, Johnnie Robertson and wife Janet, Theresa (Tery) Robertson, and Sherri Wentworth; and his granddaughter, Cristina Wentworth. He is reunited in heaven with his wife, Dorothy Robertson, his parents, Lonnie and Cordelia, and his brother Jack and sisters, Pearl, Elsie and Susie.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2026 from 1:30 to 3:30 P.M. at The Bldg 178, located at 178 S. Main in Gunnison. Kindly RSVP to Sherri at slw91377@gmail.com or text at
