Obituary for Lyal G Burr

Burrville, Utah - In the pre-dawn hours of November 26, 2018 Lyal G Burr laid down his mortal body and rose to a glorious new day on the other side of the veil greeted by loved ones there. His loving sweetheart and devoted companion, Wana Lu Burr, was by his side as he passed on. He was 83 years old.

Lyal was born on March 14, 1935, the 5th child and 2nd son to Wilford Poulson and Mabel Ethel Beutler Burr. He was welcomed into this world by three sisters and one brother, in Burrville, Utah. He was also the last surviving of his family so, they also welcomed him as he passed out of this mortal existence.

Lyal is survived by his loving wife, Wana Lu Johansen Burr, Burrville. Douglas, (Duane) Burr, Salt Lake City, Phillip (Lisa) Burr, Burrville, Kerry (Sheri) Burr, Aurora, Janene (Darrell) Curtis, Salt Lake City, Charlie Scott (son in law) Las Vegas NV. 19 grandchildren, 26 great grand children; nieces and nephews.

Lyal was preceded in death by his daughter Cindy Scott, parents Wilford and Mabel Burr, step mother, Captolia Riddle Burr, sisters Beatrice Brown, Jean Dunn, Merle Allen, and brother Wallace Burr. Lyal’s mother died when he was only 5 years old. He was raised by his father’s second wife, Captolia Burr.

Lyal was an industrious and mischievous youth. Sometimes one wondered if he ever outgrew the mischievousness. He was a tease and loved to play practical jokes on people whether it was putting a rubber snake in someone’s truck or an extra large helping of potatoes on someone’s plate at the Koosharem Old Folks Party. He loved to have fun with people. He was generous and giving, as well.

Lyal graduated from Richfield High School class of 1953, where he was active in sports and Seminary. After graduation Lyal enlisted in the US Armed Forces. He spent 2 years in Germany at the end of the Korean Conflict. He was released from the Army in 1955. Later that year, while attending a basketball game in Wayne County with his cousin, he saw this beautiful redhead up in the bleachers. He told his cousin he wanted to go out with her. Thus started an interesting courtship. With persistence and determination he pursued Wana Lu Johansen. He finally convinced her to marry him. They were married in the Manti Temple on June 1, 1956. They were together for 62 years.

They loved Burrville and that is where the two raised three boys and two girls; teaching their children how to work hard and love the land.

He worked hard to provide for his family, working at Valley View Feedlot, Mason Machinery, and Southern Utah Fuel Company (SUFCO) His favorite occupation was that of a farmer.

He served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in many different callings. He served in the Bishopric of the Koosharem Ward, High Priest Group Leader, ward missionary, primary and Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School President. He and his wife served 6 full time missions for The Church, in San Diego, Mormon Battalion, Birmingham Alabama, Nauvoo Restoration (Twice) Martin’s Cove, WY, and Cove Fort, UT. They also served 12 years in the Manti Temple.

Over his lifetime Lyal pulled out many people from snow banks, plowed driveways for neighbors - serving the people of Grass Valley in ways too numerous to mention. He was a big man with a big heart. He loved looking for rocks, polishing them, then giving them away as pendants, Bolo ties and necklaces. He especially loved to make them for his children and grandchildren. Family was everything to Lyal.
